MCMAHON Services were called to this unique project due to their expertise in building decontamination, however the contamination source was somewhat different to usual.

Pigeons had began to nest in the ridge cap of the 6,000m² building as a result the droppings, bird feathers and faeces contaminated the building with lice and there was a risk contamination could spread a disease called Fungus Cryptococcus neoformans and could contain the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum, which can be transmitted to humans by airborne spores. If transmitted to a human it could become a fatal disease.

As a result of the contamination the work shops and store were closed and McMahon Services crew worked around the clock for a 6 day period to decontaminate the building.

Decontamination was carried out by personnel with Tyvec coveralls and respiratory protection. We utilised our trailer mounted Hepa filtration vacuum cleaner and small industrial vacuums to vacuum every surface within the complex. All areas were then wet wiped with a disinfectant.
2200 man hours were spent decontaminating the complex with no lost time incidences.

The project also involved the redesigning of the buildings vent ridge and installation of a new one to prevent pigeons infiltrating the building in the future.
