| Playford B Power
station was constructed in the early 1960's. It consists of 6 boilers
and 4 Turbines capable of generating 240 mega watts of electricity.
The refurbishment programme involved the total upgrade to maximise
electrical output, to improve automation to extend the operating
life of the power station by 20 years, and to meet the operational
requirements of the Australian National Electricity Code. The total
cost for the upgrade was in excess of 35 million
dollars.
McMahon Services were originally contracted to undertake the extensive
removal of asbestos from boilers 1, 2, and 3, as part of the overall
refurbishment programme. Following the successful completion of
the initial work Alstom extended the scope to include numerous tasks
on the site including:
- Boiler Making
- Labour hire
- Rigging
- Demolition
- Industrial cleaning
- Civil and concrete works
- Painting
- Insulation
- Specialise roofing
The project soon became a long term maintenance
contract with some 40 people employed on the project full time.
McMahon Services have been commended for their efforts as a major
contributor to the project. |
