The old Osborne
'A' Power Station was demolished some 18 years ago to ground level.
The inlet and outlet pipe work for the CW chambers remained in the
ground approximately 2m below surface level. Both pipes and the
surrounding area were heavily contaminated with chrysolite and crocidolite
asbestos.
The project involved:
The remediation of top soil over a 1,500m² area.
Demolition was undertaken of both inlet and outlet pipes
to gain access to excavate asbestos debris utilising a KX-71
3-tonne excavator.
Contaminated soil was sorted by spreading in layers. Each
bucket of material was manually sorted.
A total of 48 cubic metres of raw asbestos material was excavated
and taken to landfill.
The project was carried out over an 8 week period and involved
6 of McMahon Services asbestos and remediation personnel.
