| Broken Hill Hospital
is a large regional hospital centre located in the remote western
region of New South Wales.
The project consisted of the excavation and
pad preparation of 13,000m² for the new hospital. The fill
for the pad required the placement and compaction of over 25,000
tonnes of quarry sand.
Detailed excavation for footings and pads in
excess of 1,000m³ were completed ahead of schedule.
Car parking and roads covering 20,000m²
were constructed after the demolition was completed.
Contaminated ash was known to cover a large
portion of the site. This material was removed under strict controls
to reduce any chances of cross contamination.
Asbestos sheeting and lagging occurred extensively throughout the
entire old hospital and was removed under New South Wales WorkCover
regulations by McMahon Services skilled employees who are licensed
in New South Wales for asbestos removal.
The demolition involved the removal of a 4-storey
building which is within 6
metres of the new hospital building.
All the works over a two year period are undertaken whilst maintaining
the hospital in fully operational status.
