McMahon Services
have long been associated with the Royal Adelaide Hospital over
the past 10 years, having completed in excess of 7 million dollars
worth of asbestos removal, demolition and civil construction work.
The latest projects involved the redevelopment of the Services and
Teaching building, Outpatient building and Theatre blocks. This
project has been carried out over a 3 year period whilst the hospital
remained fully functional.
The project was extremely complicated and involved
innovative thinking from
the project team in order to effectively carry out asbestos removal
and demolition in a fully operational hospital. Some of the challenges
included: acoustic walls for noise insulation, the use of silenced
concrete cutting tools, construction of internal and external rubbish
removal chutes, tunnels for personnel access through construction
areas and air tight enclosures for asbestos removal activities.
The asbestos removal activities carried out
within the hospital were done with no elevated airborne readings
which McMahon Services received commendation from the hospital and
managing construction contractor Baulderstone Hornibrook.
Some project facts include:
- The removal of 10, 500m³ of asbestos fire proofing from
structural steel.
- The removal of asbestos from 68 internal risers.
- The decontamination and demolition of 3000 lm of air-conditioning
duct work.
- The containerising and disposal of 900m³ of asbestos
waste.
- The demolition of 4,200 lm of contaminated masonry walls
and 1,000 lm of partition walls.
- The removal of 170 precast panels.
- The recycling of 8,000m³ of masonry waste for reuse
as road base and reinstatement of screenings.
- The excavation and removal of 6,000m³ of screenings
around the perimeter of the main Hospital complex.
The project is due for completion in December
2004. All works to date have been carried out with minimal impact
to hospital operations. |
