Case Earth Awards recognise environmental innovations
"Other winning projects included the remediation
of contaminated soil at Osborne and innovative work at the Liberty
Towers Development in Glenelg.
Now in its 11th year, the Case Earth Awards
-- sponsored by Case Construction Equipment and the Civil Contractors
Federation (CCF) -- recognise and reward the significant and innovative
environmental reform that continues to take place in the construction
industry."
"A Case Earth Award winning project is one that alleviates
an existing environmental problem or minimises impacts during construction.
It can also demonstrate construction excellence," explained
executive director of the SA branch of the CCF, Bob Osborne.
“It’s encouraging to see so many
excellent examples of dedication to the environment and to improving
construction standards. The industry is enjoying a busy period in
South Australia but this has not stopped civil contractors making
the effort to come up with better ways of doing things.”
McMahon Services Australia, of Dry Creek, took
out the other two awards announced today [June 25] before an audience
of nearly 120 civil contractors.
Their first award was for the remediation of
contaminated soil at the Penrice Soda Products site in Osborne,
in the city’s west. Leaking underground gasoline storage tanks
and an accident in the 1930s which resulted in 5000 tonnes (500,000
litres) of bunker oil leaking out, caused extensive soil contamination
at the site. McMahon Services combined contaminated soil and organic
matter to create biopiles which were equipped with systems to maintain
moisture and nutrient conditions within them, and to extract and
safely discharge the gases produced by bioremediation.
McMahon Services’ second award was for
their part in the Liberty Towers Development at Glenelg. McMahon
Services had the task of completing bulk earthworks for a four-level
basement car park for almost 400 cars in the development.
This project used top down construction techniques
and presented a number of challenges including those presented by
a water table just two metres below the surface. McMahon Services
created several de-watering spears on the site to overcome this
obstacle to the excavation of 26,000m3 of material.
The 2004 Case Earth Awards for South Australia
were presented by Civil Contractors Federation National President
Gary McClure, and guest speaker at the event was sports journalist
and 5AA radio personality Michelangelo Rucci.
All state winners are now in contention for
the national honours, to be announced on Friday November 5 at the
CCF National Conference Gala Dinner in Melbourne.
